Marine Species Interactions is a Yucatan Marine BioDiversity (BDMY) project based at the Multidisciplinary Unit of Teaching and Research at Sisal, Yucatan, Mexico, belonging to the Faculty of Sciences of the Mexican National Autonomous University (UNAM). This project is a mix of students, researchers, and collaborators. We are focus on field and lab observations, scientific database gathering, and bibliographic compilation to quantify, model, describe and understand the different processes and patterns involved in interspecific relationships. This project is currently focused on guest-host relationships such as mutualisms, commensalisms, and parasitism in the American Atlantic Oceans’ marine-coastal environments. However, we are ready to expand our horizons.

In Marine Species Interactions, we attempt to generate reliable, high-quality, standardized, and open access scientific information on interactions between species by collaborating with global organizations such as the Global Biotic Interactions (GloBI) network. Our research combines hypothesis testing and scientific curiosity, along with techniques derived from descriptive biology, ecology, and complex networks. The main questions we seek to answer are, What type of interactions are we observe? What species have a generalist or specialist relationship? What is the importance of certain groups of organisms within the interaction network? or What implications does the diversity of interactions have with the biodiversity of a place?

This initiative expects to provide strategic information for environmental management plans and key species detection. This is also a place for growth, training, research, and publication of academic and scientific activities.
